Merkel offers Mexico support in Ayotzinapa case

President Enrique Peña Nieto and German Chancellor Angela Merkel agreed to cooperate in order to strengthen police forces in Mexico and fight organized crime.

At a press conference Merkel offered Mexico help in the investigation about the disappearance of the 43 missing students of Ayotzinapa, that she described as a "really difficult event."

She also offered Germany's support to train Mexican troops participating in U.N. peacekeeping operations and to prevent criminals from infiltrating security forces.

The two countries also reiterated their willigness to cooperate in human rights, energy, trade, culture and education, among other topics.

President Peña Nieto emphasized that Mexico has been open to the scrutiny of human rights defenders and rapporteurs of the United Nations and Organization of American States to advance in the defense and protection of fundamental rights.
