Mexico made a radical decision regarding electricity 

The announcement that Mexico’s Energy Ministry will take over the National Electricity System has alarmed national and international companies since this decision goes against international treaties and once again question the seriousness of the Mexican government, not only because it was a unilateral decision, also because it is a step back for the country in times when it is necessary to invest in renewable and clean energies .

In regard to ecology, the decision goes against all the international treaties signed by Mexico, which include the reduction of CO2 emissions . Moreover, it eradicates all the attempts to generate clean and cheap energy, and as a result, some alert that the decision will translate into price hikes .

Furthermore, it is expected that Mexico will be sued by ecological organizations and industries that will be affected; therefore, if Mexico renegotiated the matter once and lost money, why make the same mistake again?

Although the Sener might have valid reasons including the protection of the country’s sovereignty in regards to energy , the eradication of corruption and abusive contracts, as well as choosing the energy generated by the government over the one generated by suppliers, it is still not clear why the Mexican government in a time when it should be focused on reactivating the national economy , comprising investments that create jobs.

Additionally, the decision compromises the access to electricity and puts the urgent need to create jobs at risk because it will drive foreign investors away.

If the government is right and it was necessary to make this decision in regards to energy , this is the worst timing for a decision like this, this is a time when the Mexican economy needs investment. Moreover, even if the argument presented by the Energy Ministry is correct, the critical stage face by the country invalidates all reasons.
