in Guatemala will host the 21st Paiz Art Biennial , one of the oldest visual arts event in the world, according to its organizers.
At the José Gorostiza Gallery of the ICM, a photography and visual arts gallery was installed, surrounding the subject of migrants away from their country. The exhibition will be open for all audiences during the biennial event from August 16 to September 16 .
The exhibition features works from artists Alexia Miranda, from El Salvador, Andrés Vargas, Kevin Frank Pellecer, Roberto Escobar, and Rodolfo Walsh, from Guatemala .
“The Biennial usually does not focus on a specific subject; however, for this exhibition, authors will present art pieces surrounding the subject of migration from their individual standpoint,” stated the coordinator Sandra Arizandieta in an interview with Notimex , adding that it was the first time that the event would take place at the ICM.
In addition to guided tours for students and academics, the event has shown a relevant attendance from general audiences, including followers of the Paiz Arts Biennial and art connoisseurs from all over the world.
The coordinator explained that “the Paiz Art Biennial was conducted within a circle of cultural centers meant to stimulate tourism and an interactive relation with the works of art.”
According to the event organizers, the Paiz Art Biennial is the sixth oldest biennial event in the world , and second in Latin America after the Venice Biennial (1895) , the one from Sao Paulo, Brazil (1951) ; Liubliana (1955), Sydney (1973), and the Whitney Museum (1932/1973) in New York .
The biennial event from Guatemala has gone without interruption for 42 years , even during some of the country’s most challenging internal conflicts.
The 21st biennial will broaden the event’s horizons by including Guatemalan samples at Mexico City’s Contemporary Art Museum and the Siqueiros Public Art Hall , as well as the NG gallery in Panama .
