Today, Mexican entrepreneur Martha Ruiz became the first woman to receive the Innovators of America Award for her project “ Basket of Products and Services from the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve .”
At the ceremony, which was held in New York City , Colombian Sebastián Torres and Costa Rican Christian Marín won in other categories.
“I would like to raise awareness on the critical moment that our planet is going through, we are destroying a cosmic legacy that is not ours to destroy,” stated Ruiz upon receiving the award from the hands of the First Lady of Colombia, María Juliana Ruiz .
In the third edition of the award, the Mexican was decorated in the “ Social Development ” category for her project, which seeks to reconcile economic development with the preservation of the environment in the communities of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve in the state of Querétaro .
Each of the winners obtained a trophy and a 20,000-dollar award each . The Mexican assured she would use the money to help make her country greener.
“I dream of making Mexico greener, from the state of Baja California all the way to Yucatán . I want it green and I want to show these regenerative practices to locals, convincing state governors to implement the model that Querétaro has applied for the reduction of carbon production,” she added.
Colombian journalist Patricia Janiot
, from the directors board of Innovators of America, stated that the prize served as a great opportunity to promote projects that are “usually ignored.”
“I felt that we had to popularize innovation by making these people and their contributions to society more attractive for the media,” she claimed.
