On Tuesday, Mattel announced a new series called Inspiring Women in honor of International Women’s Day , as Barbie is committed to shining a light on empowering role models past and present in an effort to inspire girls around the world.
This series follows the Sheroes series portraying "female heroes who inspire girls by breaking boundaries and expanding possibilities for women everywhere.”
With a doll in their likeness, Barbie honored twenty-one extraordinary women such as Snowboarding champion Chloe Kim , Filmmaker Patty Jenkins , Conservationist Bindi Irwin , NASA Mathematician & Physicist Katherine Johnson , Soccer player Sara Gama , World-renowned Hélène Darroze , Professional golfer Lorena Ochoa , and Fine artist Frida Kahlo , among others.
Frida Kahlo
( 1907-1954 ) was a Mexican artist and feminist icon. As an artist she addressed important topics like identity, class, and race, influencing and inspiring others to follow their dreams and paint their own realities.
The Frida Kahlo Barbie doll will have a special headdress, earrings and clothing set inspired by the Mexican painter but with slightly different features such as a sharper face, lighter tone eyes, and almost no facial hair, in spite of Frida's unibrow and light mustache which were her own subversion statements to feminine beauty standards.
Inspiring Women
will be mass produced and it will be available in stores starting on April 20.
