Omar Gómez Trejo, the special prosecutor investigating the enforced disappearance of 43 students in 2014, said authorities are certain of where the remains of Christian Alfonso Rodríguez Telumbre were found; however, they are uncertain about where Alexander Mora Venancio’s remains were found. In the case of Jhosivani Guerrero de la Cruz, there is no genetic evidence that proves it is him.

In an interview with EL UNIVERSAL, Gómez Trejo said that “the identification of Alexander Mora Venancio is 100% clear but it is still unknown where did authorities find [his remains], and regarding Jhosivani Guerrero de la Cruz, there is no certainty, not even of his identification, as [the remains] didn’t show the genetic patterns the experts asked for.”

How the prosecutor, the recent identification of Christian Alfonso, by the University of Innsbruck and Forensic Anthropology experts, proves that the missing 43 Ayotzinapa students weren’t incinerated at the Cocula dumpster, as the now-defunct General Prosecutor’s Office (PGR) argued in its “historical truth.”

Moreover, the prosecutor investigating the Ayotzinapa case reveals two agents from the Federal Ministerial Police have been arrested for allegedly torturing one of the suspects arrested in connection with the tragic events that took place in Iguala, Guerrero, nearly six years ago.

What is the hypothesis that led to the discovery of the remains?

—A line of inquiry. The hypothesis is the disappearance of the students on that day, later, they tried to build a narrative with testimonies obtained through torture, evidence obtained through illicit means, a situation that was already handled by the Matamoros’ Collegiate Tribunal in 2018.

What we reported, the findings, is key in the sense that there is a new line of inquiry where we have already identified student Christian Alfonso Rodríguez Telumbre, this is the only certain identification that we have.

Obviously, we have a series of partial testimonies, crime reconstructions where (authorities) weren’t careful back then, and we have been rectifying and recovering, and that has helped us to build stronger information regarding a narrative of how a mechanic of disappearance was developed.

What would change from the narrative? Because the historical truth established that the Ayotzinapa students were kidnapped, murdered, and incinerated at the Cocula dumpster.

—The Cocula dumpster theory was been questioned for several years. What we are certain of is about what we found in a place called Barranca de la Carnicería, after we carried out a diligence in November, where we found Christian Alfonso Rodríguez Telumbre’s remains, that is the narrative and conviction. It is an identification process that was accompanied by the victims, their representatives, and experts.

So the PGR explores the Barranca de la Carnicería and registered it in the file inherited from the previous administration?

—There was negligence on behalf of the investigators and we have to explore with responsibilities (sic.). They were 800 meters away from the Cocula dumpster and we can’t understand why they couldn’t realize or explore more, or why didn’t they try to carry out a series of diligences.

It is something we are already investigating and we will inform society when it is time, in the sense that they closed all lines of inquiry and they married one idea.

What remains did you find at the so-called Barranca de la Carnicería?

—We found over 130 bone fragments that were classified, there was a minimum percentage that was human and the majority of the bones were exposed to fire and were found on the surface.

Regarding the Ayotzinapa case, three students have been identified?

—No, this is what we have to make clear. We revealed Christian Alfonso Rodríguez Telumbre was identified, who is the only one we know was found in a specific location.

The identification of Alexander Mora Venancio was 100% clear but what we don’t know is exactly where was he found.

Jhosivani Guerrero de la Cruz, his identification was uncertain, since the remains didn’t have the genetic pattern experts asked for.

Are you going to send more remains found in Cocula to the University of Innsbruck?

—We have a package ready but due to the pandemic, European airports aren’t receiving flights from Mexico and we have to wait.

The remains do not come from the Barranca de la Carnicería, they are several (bone fragments) and they were found in Cocula.

Will there be more arrest regarding the torture of suspects?

—Two weeks go, a district judge granted us an arrest warrant against four ministerial police officers who tortured one of the alleged suspects, two of them have been detained, one of them was killed earlier this year in Tamaulipas, and another one is on the run.
