According to the report of the National Center for Disaster Prevention (Cenapred), the monitoring system of Popocatépetl volcano registered yesterday at 6:50 pm an episode of Strombolian activity, which was accompanied by the emission of volcanic gases and ash to a height of 2.5 km above the crater.
This activity ended today at 5:17am. During this activity, emissions of incandescent fragments were observed.
Due to the direction of the winds, ash fall was reported in 9 districts of Mexico City: Milpa Alta, Xochimilco, Tlalpan, Cuajimalpa, Magdalena Contreras, Álvaro Obregón, Tláhuac and Iztapalapa. Also in the municipalities of the State of Mexico: Ozumba, Atlautla, Tlalmanalco, Ecatzingo, Tepetlixpa and Amecameca.
Additionally, 35 low-intensity exhalations accompanied by emissions of steam, gas and ash, two volcano-tectonic earthquakes, as well as 121 minutes of harmonic tremor and an explosion at 7:34 am were reported.
Popocatépetl volcano has been periodically erupting since 1994.
