Kate del Castillo said that Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán risked his life for her, and denied that she was part of a plan to recapture the drug dealer.
In an interview with Carmen Aristegui for CNN, del Castillo acknowledged that her friendship with the leader of the Sinaloa cartel reached such a level of trust that he neglected his safety and relaxed his communications.
Guzmán "was genuine with me and trusted me so much that he risked his life for me. He trusted the people I brought to him because he trusted me," del Castillo added.
The actress also said that “El Chapo” said that he loved Mexico in several of the messages they exchanged, though she thought his claim was “ridiculous and ironic” because "you don't damage what you love."
Del Castillo added that Guzmán “never had the intention” to invest in her tequila company and asked Mexico's Attorney General's Office to investigate her and declare publicly that she did not commit any crime, neither had an affair with “El Chapo”.
“I fear retaliation from the Mexican government,” she added.
The actress explained that the Mexican government asked her lawyers in the U.S. not to talk about the investigation.
“They will arrest me and place me under house arrest in 80 days, and they can change my status. I fear going to Mexico.”
