The Ministry of Health in Nuevo León reported that during the current season five cases of chikungunya have been detected.

In an interview, the head of the agency, Jesús Zacarías Villarreal Pérez said that all the patients were monitored and needed ambulatory care.

One of the cases was detected in the municipality of Montemorelos and the rest in the metropolitan area of Monterrey.

Villarreal Pérez said that all the patients are from the south of the country.

However, he said that the vector transmission -Aedes Aegypty- is the same as dengue, so "a local transmission is expected at any moment" he added.

The most common symptoms are fever and joint pain. Other symptoms may include headache, muscle pain, joint swelling, or rash. Chikungunya disease does not often result in death, but the symptoms can be severe and disabling.
