President Andrés Manuel López Obrador presented his second annual report during an event plagued by rhetoric, politics, and self-compliments, where the President described a different country, especially during a time when Mexico is facing a serious crisis. It was more of a campaign rally than a state of the union address ; moreover, it was accompanied by a series of spots broadcasted on TV, which appear to be proselytism than a way to communicate with people.
Besides boasting about the fight against corruption and the end of the abusive practices that characterized previous administrations, the President emphasized austerity and the fact Mexico did not acquire a debt. López Obrador even boasted about saving over MXN 560,000 million, which the government will distribute according to its criteria. However, he did not address the millions in compensations the country will have to pay after canceling projects programs, and agreements reached during previous administrations; these decisions also scared investment away.
Furthermore, the federal government attributed several achievements to itself, even when not has little or no control over these situations, such as the decrease in the price of U.S. dollars, oil prices, and the increase in remittances. Nevertheless, all these phenomenons are the result of the effect the COVID-19 pandemic had on the world’s economy, but especially in the U.S.
Recommended: The President will deliver his state of the union address
And although the President recognized that a sector of society demanded a change in his economic policies , López Obrador said he won’t give in because that goes against the consistency required by his project. Moreover, he emphasized his strategy will continue on the same path and that his government will only help people. And although the President insists on affirming that Mexico is creating new jobs, companies and businesses are shutting down thought the country.
However, we must consider that the President’s message did not include a confrontation with those who have attempted to create an opposition group, it was also prudent, and López Obrador did not mention any of his adversaries or ex-presidents. Since the President boasts about his consistency, he and his team must evaluate the effect of his policies because it seems that the strategy aims to keep people under poverty instead of helping them.
