Mexico to take action before the WTO against the U.S.

will start a dispute settlement process against the United State s before the World Trade Organization ( WTO ) over the tariffs on steel and aluminum which entered into force and effect last week, according to a statement released today by the Ministry of Economy.

The Donald Trump administration announced last week that metals coming from Canada , Mexico , and the European Union would be subjected to tariffs, starting June 1, ending months of uncertainty over a possible tariff exemption.

“Press release. Mexico will start a dispute settlement process against the U.S. before the WTO over the measures against Mexican steel and aluminum,” reads the tweet of Mexico's Ministry of Economy.

“Mexico considers the measures imposed by the United States under Section 232 of their legislation, arguing threats to their national security, are in violation of the Agreement on Safeguards of the WTO since these were not adopted according to the procedures set forth; moreover, they violate the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade [GATT] of 1994.”

The statement concludes with the confirmation that Mexico's actions will continue to adhere to international trade laws and will be proportional to the “damages” received.
