Believe it or not, people are not used to seagulls or macaws at the shore of Miramar beach for raccoons are all over the place.

The Escolleras pier , at the end of Miramar beach , works as an artificial border between River Pánuco and the Gulf of Mexico , but, above all, it is home to hundreds of raccoons that have become the main tourist attraction in Ciudad Madero .
Little by little, these small mammals took over the pier after his natural habitat, the Casuarinas forest , disappeared due to hotel development, according to the Miramar Trust for the Protection and Preservation of Raccoons .
Although many of them still live in what is left of their natural area , most of them have made the pier their permanent home.

The Trust, founded and directed by Hortencia Ruvalcaba Infante , mentions that it is in charge of feeding and taking care of the raccoons with resources generated by the Trust itself and thanks to small donations . And although there have been problems with locals for considering them a plague, there is currently a federal protection law that, along with the civil association and Semarnat , guarantee the conservation of the species.
These curious animals are one of the most peculiar tourist attractions in Miramar beach and even though you can feed them freely with safety, it is not recommended to pet them or hold them because, in the end, they are not domesticated .
