Mexico City's Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation has launched two separate contests that together aim to build an electric taxi using 100% Mexican technology.
The first initiative consists of assembling the cars in a plant in the country, and the second consists of developing a prototype of electric batteries.
In a press statement, the Ministry says that to achieve this goal, they have entered into a partnership with the companies Giant Motors Latinoamérica, S.A. de C.V., Moldex Innovating With You, and the Toluca campus of the Tecnológico de Monterrey university.
Several electric car prototypes are currently on display at the 2016 Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Expo in Mexico City, “Economy and Climate Change: Clean Energy for a Great City,” which is hosted this year at the World Trade Center in Mexico City.
According to the Ministry's press statement, the main objective of the projects is to help improve the quality of the air in the Mexico City megalopolis
