After four years of development, Mexican director Alejandro González Iñárritu has started working on an experimental virtual reality short film about immigration.
According to Variety, the short fill will be produced and financed by Legendary Entertainment and Fondazione Prada. ILMxLAB, Lucasfilm’s recently established division, will build the virtual world and characters.
Iñárritu and Mexican cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki will experiment for their first time a “space narrative” in this new visual medium.
The short film is about the journey of a group of immigrants and refugees crossing the border between Mexico and the United States, according to Variety.
Iñárritu has won two Oscar for best director for “Birdman” and “The Revenant,” both shot by Lubezki.
