The probable election of Republican hopeful Donald Trump as president of the United States would be really bad for that country, but would also have a positive effect on Latin America, according to the Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa.
Correa also had nothing but praise for Democratic hopefuls Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.
In a conversation with radio journalists, Correa expressed that Trump's "speech is so awkward, so basic that it could cause a reaction from Latin America."
"Having a guy like this around would be very bad for the United States, I think. But Latin America is fairly independent now, and his message, even for the progressive tendencies of Latin America, would have a positive effect in the region," he said.
Trump leads in the polls for the GOP nomination, but has generated resistance from large sector of society and even from his own party, because of his positions, particularly regarding migration.
Talking about Clinton, Correa said that "in regard to objective, real matters of benefit to the United States, to world peace, quite obviously a person like Hillary Clinton is much better. I admire Hillary Clinton very much".
He also praised Sanders, saying that "he is 74 and has the support of the younger people. Why? Because he is an iconoclast, he is against Wall Street, against the big multinationals. He is saying what the people want to hear".
