Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto has left the hospital after undergoing surgery to remove his gallbladder.

Peña Nieto left the Central Military Hospital about midday Sunday, telling the press he is feeling "very good" and thanking doctors and nurses for their professional care. He will return to his regular schedule Monday, including a visit by Spanish King Felipe VI.

The 48-year-old president had the operation on Friday after experiencing "intense discomfort." Doctors said it was the only option. They said he was fully healthy and in charge after the surgery.

The illness forced Peña Nieto to cancel plans to travel to Guatemala on Friday for a regional summit of national leaders.

In July 2013, he underwent surgery to remove a thyroid nodule, which showed no signs of malignancy.
