The famous Mexican novel “Como agua para chocolate” (Like Water for Chocolate) will now be turned into a TV series for Netflix and a musical that will have its premiere on Broadway , claimed its author Laura Esquivel .
“I am not sure when the TV series is coming out, what I do know is that the musical will have its premiere next year on Broadway,” stated Esquivel during a press conference at Mexico’s Cultural Center in Miami on November last year.
Published in 1989 , Like Water for Chocolate has sold more than 7 million copies and was taken to the big screen in 1992.
In 2016, Laura Esquivel published a sequel to the original book called “El diario de Tita” (Tita’s Diary) , completing a trilogy in 2018 with her latest novel “ Mi negro pasado ” ( My Black Past ), which addresses racial prejudice and an acceptance of the body.
Last year, Esquivel visited Miami to participate at the 35th edition of the Miami Book Fair , organized by the Miami Dade College, where she participated in a Spanish chapter of the Ibero-American Authors program along with Jaime Bayly , from Peru.
Winner of the Giussepe Acerby award at the University of Verona, Italy for her novel “Tan veloz como el Deseo” (Swift as Desire), Laura Esquivel presented “El diario de Tita” and “Mi negro pasado,” meant to complete the trilogy she began with the famous Like Water for Chocolate.
