, the critically acclaimed film by Mexican director Alfonso Cuarón , was nominated for Original Screenplay at the Writers Guild of America (WGA) yesterday, according to the organization’s website .
The film, which was written and directed by Cuarón, won the Golden Globes for Best Foreign-Language Film and Best Director last Sunday , and will compete for best Original Screenplay against Eight Grade, Green Book, A Quiet Place, and Vice at the WGA awards .
Cuarón’s film pays a nostalgic homage to his upbringing in Mexico City. Starring first-time actress Yalitza Aparicio , with a story that centers on an indigenous woman that works as a housemaid for a white and bourgeois family in 1970s Mexico City .
Acclaimed by critics last year, Roma won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and has been chosen to compete at this year’s Academy Awards for Best Foreign Film.
Its exhibition in Mexican theaters was not without controversy. Since Netflix only allowed for it to premiere three weeks before it was launched on Netflix , some of the most important movie theater chains decided not to exhibit it.
The WGA Awards ceremony will take place on February 17 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles .
