Mexico reaffirms its position as the first country in the American continent and the seventh in the world , with the largest number of properties included on the World Heritage List of the United Nations Organization for the Education, Science and Culture (UNESCO) .
The Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) reported that the above is the result of a coordinated effort that allowed for the consolidation of a total of 27 cultural, six natural, and two mixed sites .

In a statement, the Ministry pointed out that there were new additions to the mixed sites list, such as the Maya City and Protected Forests of Calakmul Ancient Biosphere Reserve in 2014 , and this year the Tehuacán Cuicatlán Biosphere Reserve .
Likewise, the El Pinacate and Gran Desierto de Altar Biosphere Reserve , and the Revillagigedo National Park were registered as natural sites in 2013 and 2016 each.

recalled that Mexico represents 10% of the world's biodiversity and barely occupies one percent of the earth's surface.
Half of the plants that can be found in the country are endemic ; that is, they only exist in Mexico; and the same happens with half of the reptiles , while in the case of mammals , 32 percent are exclusive to Mexico.

The unit stressed that Mexico has demonstrated its commitment to the conservation of the planet, having enacted the National Strategy on Biodiversity of Mexico (ENBioMex) and Plan of Action 2016-2030 , presented at the COP-13 on Biodiversity in Cancun .
It explained that ENBioMex establishes 14 guiding principles and is integrated by strategic axes such as knowledge, education, communication, and environmental Culture ; c onservation and restoration; sustainable use and management; attention to pressure factors, and Integration and governance .
