On Friday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said the United States has agreed to extradite a fugitive former state governor wanted on corruption, money laundering, and illicit enrichment charges.

César Duarte Jáquez, who governed the northern border state of Chihuahua from 2010 to 2016, has been accused by Mexican authorities of misappropriating public funds.

Did you know Mexico and the U.S. are working jointly to trace César Duarte?

His whereabouts are currently unknown.

Duarte, who governed Chihuahua for the long-ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI), has previously denied wrongdoing. His successor as governor, Javier Corral, has said that he believed Duarte fled to neighboring Texas.

Have you heard a judge ordered the arrest of former governor César Duarte?

López Obrador, a leftist who took office about a year ago pledging to stamp out corruption, said Mexico’s last attorney general did not properly submit the extradition request.

“This has now been resolved, and there is an affirmative response from the United States government... the extradition will proceed,” López Obrador told a regular news conference.

Did you know César Duarte is allegedly hiding in New Mexico?

U.S. authorities notified Mexico about two weeks ago, López Obrador said.

Did you know Karime Macías could be extradited to Mexico in late 2020?
