Sergio Mayer Bretón, chairman of the Culture and Cinematography Commission in Mexico’s Chamber of Deputies, has informed that filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón and first-time actress Yalitza Aparicio will both be given an award.

“We have invited Cuarón and Yalitza to receive an award through the Chamber of Deputies for their great work. This will be done hand in hand with the Commission on Indigenous Issues, though we are still waiting for their confirmation,” said Mayer Bretón.

The Morena deputy informed that, regardless of the results of this year’s Oscar awards, which will take place this weekend, Cuarón will be given the award.

“We are convinced that ‘Roma’ will win Mexico several statuettes. They will receive an award for their amazing and laudable work. All Mexicans should be proud that our history and culture is being honored throughout the world,” added the statesman.
