Mexico President Enrique Peña Nieto decorated Isaac Hernández, world-famous ballet dancer from Jalisco, with the Bellas Artes Medal, which is offered by the Ministry of Culture through the National Institute of Fine Arts in recognition of the trajectory and cultural value of Mexican artists and creators.

At the National Palace, the chief of state congratulated the artist “for his talent and dedication, through which he has reached the peak of his career as a professional dancer in international stages,” stated the Presidency of the Republic through a press release.

The government body added that the President congratulated Hernández for becoming the first Mexican to obtain the “Benois de la Danse” award, which is given by the International Dance Association of Moscow to the best dancer in the world.

Isaac Hernández was born in Guadalajara, Jalisco, in 1990. He learned his first dance lessons with his father and, since 2015, he has worked as first dancer for the English National Ballet. He was a scholarship recipient at the National Council for Culture and Arts (CONACULTA) and the National Institute of Fine Arts.

For the past seven years, Isaac Hernández has worked on a cultural project called Despertares (Awakenings), which seeks to promote the taste for the creative dance industries in Mexico, generating a positive impact in the country’s cultural life through performances and dance classes.

Hernández is currently visiting Mexico for the Despertares festival. Auditions to join the English National Ballet in London started yesterday. The dancer will also offer a Master Class.

The Despertares gala will take place at the National Auditorium on Saturday 25 and Sunday 26.
