Five children from Tezontepec de Aldama, a municipality in the state of Hidalgo, won the first three places in the 2019 Aloha Mental Arithmetic contest, which took place in Foshan, China.

In first place: Santiago Ángeles Cornejo and Eduardo Cornejo Cruz; in second place, Kimberly Corina Cruz Aguilar and Francisco Zaid Pérez Martínez, and in third place, Carlos Abraham Hernández Cruz.

The children qualified for the international contest after winning the first places in a contest in Querétaro, where they solved 70 mathematical operations in less than five minutes.

In order for the children to travel to the competition, their families launched a campaign to raise funds and even went to the local Congress in hopes of receiving support; nevertheless, they were able to raise the money through raffles.

Aloha Mental Arithmetic is a mental development program for children between 5 and 14, as part of an effort to strengthen the teaching of arithmetic through mathematical operations and calculations, carried out against the clock.

The program looks to promote velocity, precision, analytic ability, and confidence among students.
