Mexican marines and soldiers took over the police force, from the city of Acapulco, based on suspicions of ties to organized crime groups, arresting two officers accused of homicide and seizing weapons and equipment.

Acapulco, Guerrero, was once a glamorous beach resort for Hollywood’s rich and famous but turned into one of the most murderous cities in the world in recent years.

Guerrero is the hub of opium poppy production and the scene of frequent violent clashes between drug cartels.

The military personnel, federal and state police, as well as Guerrero's attorney general’s office, disarmed Acapulco's municipal police officers and arrested two of them for their “probable responsibility” in a homicide case, they said in a joint statement.

Other police officers are under investigation, adding that weapons, bulletproof vests, ammunition, and radios were seized.
