Captain Juan José Aguilar Talavera, who was flying the private jet that crashed in Ocampo, Coahuila, when it was flying from Las Vegas to Monterrey, had been arrested in 2006 by Mexico's Attorney General's Office, after he was accused of being part of a group that worked for Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.

Also, Aguilar Talavera allegedly participated in an illegal operation to transport Muammar Gaddafi's son, Saadi Gaddafi, and his family to Mexico in 2011 by using false documents, according to Mexico's Attorney General's Office,

During the complex and risky operation to bring Saadi Gaddafi to Mexico, Mexican businessman Christian Eduardo Esquino Núñez provided the group with a Hawker 800 in exchange for USD $145,000 but the plan failed when the three pilots, including Talavera, refused to follow the plan and fly to Lybia.
