This summer, some of Mexico’s forest wetlands will become filled with the natural light of fireflies

From June to August, some of Mexico’s forest wetlands will become filled with the natural light of fireflies: Soft-bodied beetles that use bioluminescence during twilight to attract mates or prey.

Since the firefly’s mating season is about to start, today we bring you a list of places near Mexico City where you can see these magnificent animals in their full splendor.

1- Nanacamilpa, Tlaxcala: There are five eco-tourism centers distributed throughout 494 acres of forest that make up the Firefly Sanctuary of Nanacamilpa. Only one and a half hour away from Mexico City, the sanctuary offers guided tours for between MXN$150 and $300. You can also spend the night in one of their fine cabins. For reservations, click here.

2- Tepotzotlán, State of Mexico: Before entering the mountain areas of this magical town to see the fireflies, you may want to try out a special tour offered by the Tepotzotlán Tourism Board. It features a workshop that will help you learn about these insects’ life cycle and status. Afterward, there will be guided tours to the forest, where you will be able to observe these animals take flight. At the end of the tour, you will be offered a special dinner made with local ingredients. Don’t miss this special experience from June 27 to August 3, at a cost of MXN$520 per person. Tepotzotlán is only 44 minutes away from Mexico City.

3- El Llanito Sanctuary, Tlalpujahua: This magical town has a new firefly sanctuary called El Llanito. Firefly season has already started and will end on the last week of august. In order to access the sanctuary, you’ll need to hire a tour guide. The tour is only MXN$50. However, you may also stay the night and have dinner at the sanctuary. Tlalpujahua is an hour away from Mexico City.
