Local, state and federal officials launched a program in Tapachula where citizens can trade in guns for appliances, such as television sets, refrigerators, tablets or home audio systems, as part of a new campaign aimed at curbing gun-related violence in the region.

Authorities say that the process is 100% anonymous and confidential and they won't be asking for any personal information from anyone interested in participating in the program.

State prosecutor Enrique Méndez Rojas said that the campaign will initially last one week, and depending on demand, may be extended.
