Canada lifts visa requirement for Mexican tourists

The Government of Canada hopes to recover the flow of travelers from Mexico that it enjoyed prior to its 2009 decision to impose tourist visa requirements for Mexicans by lifting this requirement beginning December 1, 2016.

“This visa requirement will be revoked beginning in December. We expect to have the same flow of travelers that we had prior to the visa requirement. Today we receive about 120 thousand travelers from Mexico, but we used to receive 300 thousand. We expect an increase of 20 thousand travelers in upcoming months and a full recovery in the near future. This will benefit both Canada and Mexico,” said Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Stéphane Dion.

In a joint statement released by Dion and Claudia Ruiz Massieu, Mexico's Minister of Foreign Affairs, both leaders said they have reached an agreement regarding the Mexico Bilateral Human Rights Dialogue.

Ruiz Massieu praised the Canadian government's determination to eliminate the visa requirement for Mexicans as part of a series of agreements made during Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto's recent visit to Canada.
