The Ministry of Social Development (SEDESOL) said that 19 million tons of food are wasted every year in Mexico, that could feed at least 27 million people.

Almost half of the wasted food are fruits and vegetables (46%), followed by cereals (29%) and animal products, such as meat and dairy (25%).

SEDESOL is analyzing with civil society and the private sector mechanisms and strategies to avoid this waste.

It added that Mexico has the second largest food bank network, with 60 offices in 29 states that recover 120,000 tons of food per year, i.e. 60% of the total in Latin America and the Caribbean, and almost 5,000 community kitchens that feed over half a million people.
