The Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources, through the Office of the Attorney for Environmental Protection, asked Volkswagen for the necessary information to corroborate that 39,890 diesel vehicles sold in our country between 2009 and 2015 meet the current regulations.
Minister Rafael Pacchiano Alamán expressed that the authorities want to "ensure full compliance to the Mexican environmental standards" after VW admitted to altering the software in diesel vehicles sold in the U.S. in order to simulate a reduction in pollutant emissions.
He explained that while the diesel units in Mexico do not come with the same technology that was the cause of the infringement detected by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the same tests will be made and there will be sanctions in case of any irregularity.
The Ministry will use the services of the Mexican Petroleum Institute and the International Council on Clean Transportation in order to conduct the tests.
