, Gerardo , Jorge and José Ramón won the first place in the Latin America Competition of the International Mathematics Competition for University Students ( IMC ), which took place from July 31 to August 5 at the American University in Bulgaria , in Blagoevgrad , eastern Europe.
The undergraduates at the Faculty of Sciences ( Facultad de Ciencias ) of the National Autonomous University of Mexico ( Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México abbreviated UNAM ), surpassed Brazil , a country that in previous years had always won first place in the Latin America Competition, earning the 22nd position worldwide .
UNAM students solved complex algebra exams, real and complex analysis, geometry problems and combinatorics during two days implying at least five hours of hard work.

, gold medal winner in the individual tests, commented that weeks before the competition he spent about six hours of diligent study every day.
While José Ramón Turián acknowledged that the competition required different skills to those that are taught in the university.
Meanwhile, Jorge Fernandez said that the exam is in English, adding complexity to the competition.
Luis Eduardo García
, team captain, explained that the economic support to attend to the IMC came from the Institute of Mathematics ( Instituto de Matemáticas abbreviated IM ) and an Internal Academic Program of the Faculty of Sciences, as the average cost is MXN$ 50,000 per student to attend the competition.
