Following her performance in Alfonso Cuarón’s masterpiece Roma, and her Oscar nomination, Yalitza Aparicio has become a symbol of pride in Mexico and Oaxaca, her home state.
This is why the artist collective Los Top Tequila has included Yalitza Aparicio in a mural named “Orgullo Oaxaca” (Oaxaca Pride) , where the actress’ face is seen with a bright-colored iguana on top of her head. The artists started painting the mural in early April.
Los Top Tequila
was created a year ago and features Koka, Kuek Glez, Alter Os, and Sekta .
The team seeks to raise awareness of social issues and pay homage to Mexican culture through its murals. This is why they chose Yalitza Aparicio as the protagonist of “Orgullo Oaxaca.”
“We were inspired by the actress because she represented Mexico and Oaxaca, despite being criticized by many people. Moreover, she showed us that any Mexican can thrive and follow their dreams,” stated artist Omar Arias, better known as Alter Os .
