Although there is an important cultural offer in Mexico, attendance to cultural events has decreased 6% in the last 2 years.

Mexicans' favorite cultural activity is going to the movies or watching movies, while the least favorite events are dance shows.

This was informed by the Inegi, through their poll about cultural events (MODECULT), which measures the attendance levels of the 18+ public to plays, concerts or live music shows, dance shows, exhibitions, and movie projections.

The survey, carried out in May 2018 in cities with over 100,000 inhabitants, shows that in the last 12 months, 58.1% of the population attended one of those cultural events, which reflects a difference with the 2016 survey. In 2016, 64% of the population said they had attended one of those activities.

The report indicates that from those who took part in the poll, 86.2% said that they had attended a movie projection or gone to the movies; 49% had been to a concert or a live music performance; 25.6% has seen a play, while 25.5% had gone to an exhibition, and 22.1% had been to a dance show.

According to the report, between 2016 and 2018, men are the ones who attend cultural events more. Although more women said that their favorite cultural activity is attending a dance show or a play.

The survey reports that, according to the education level, the ones who attend cultural events less are those who don't have a basic education. This highlights the “importance to promote these kinds of events among people with a lower education level”.

Other data obtained from this survey is that television is the media outlet through which people mostly find out about movie projections or movies, as well as concerts, dance and theater shows, while the internet and social media are the biggest sources to learn about exhibitions.

In regards to cultural tourism, the report indicates that the most frequent cultural activities carried out by the visitors are tasting typical dishes, 88.5%; visiting the main square or plazas, 87.9%. Those who visit other cities usually don't attend local cultural events.

Some of the cities where the surveys were carried out are Tijuana, La Paz, Campeche, Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Mexico City, and Tlaxcala.
