Only twelve days after an 8.2-magnitude earthquake hit Mexico minutes before midnight on Thursday, September 7 , a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit the country once again on Tuesday, September 19 on the 32nd anniversary of the 1985 earthquake which caused over 10,000 deaths as well as extensive material losses and damage in Mexico City.
The 7.1 quake collapsed over 40 buildings , and just a few blocks away from the debris, hundreds of people formed human chains to move cans, bottles of water, blankets, gloves, and medicines in industrial quantities for those affected.
The Mexican community abroad showed that despite the distance, Mexicans do not leave their country and they have organized fundraising events to send help even from far away.
The international community has expressed their solidarity and leaders, public officials, and personalities have sent many personal gestures of support and collaboration.
International rescue teams, technical teams, and brigades arrived in the country to provide the immediate assistance after the catastrophe.
Many foreigners have come from all over the world to help and among them, Paul Fitz , a London firefighter , traveled to Mexico without any financial support to join volunteers in Mexico City .
On his Facebook account, the English firefigther wrote in Spanish: “It was an honor to help your beautiful country. I have met so many amazing people and the kindness you have shown has amazed me. […] God blessed me, because now I'm Mexican!!! […]" when reporting his participation in the rescue work.
Paul Fitz has organized a fundraising event after returning to London as well.
