On Sunday, April 1 , daylight saving time ( DTS ) comes into effect in nearly every region in Mexico , thus the general population is reminded to “ spring forward ” one hour on Saturday night before going to sleep to start activities with the new schedule.

This measure has been applied in the country since 1996 and it usually begins on the first Sunday of April while it ends on the last Sunday of October, according to the Ministry of Energy ( SENER ).

In 2017, daylight saving time saved 885.70 gigawatt hours ( Gwh ), equivalent to the consumption of 7.78 million self-ballasted compact fluorescent lamps lit for a year, 24 hours a day, according to a series of studies carried out by the Electric Power Savings Trust Fund ( FIDE ), the Federal Electricity Commission ( CFE ), and the National Electric and Clean Energies Institute ( INEEL ).

Overall, DTS in 2017 saved primary energy consumption equivalent to 1.13 million barrels of oil .
