Alleged serial rapist bound over for trial after attacking a woman in Mexico City

A judge bound an alleged serial rapist over for trial and ordered him to remain in prison. Authorities arrested the man on September 4. According to local prosecutors, the man sexually abused a woman at the Chapultepec park , but he could be involved in as many as 20 attacks.

Two police officers arrested the criminal at midnight after a woman approached them and told them about the attack. The description provided by the victim allowed police officers to identify and arrest the man.

The judge gave local authorities two months to carry out an investigation.

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum said local authorities will test the attacker’s DNA to confirm if he is the serial rapist who attacked 20 women in the Miguel Hidalgo borough . She added that local authorities have arrested four rapists in the area in recent months; however, their DNA did not match the serial rapist’s.

A portrait of the serial rapist was widely shared on social media in recent weeks. Back then, the local prosecutor’s office said the attacker was a dark-skinned and thin man between 35 and 40 years old.

According to authorities, the criminal attacked women who passed by parks located in the Miguel Hidalgo borough. He threatened women with a knife and sexually abused them. He did not rob them.

In recent years, Mexico City has registered the presence of several serial rapists.

Last year, rape, sexual abuse, and sexual attacks against women increased in six months, especially when women took taxis . The surge in rape cases promoted the Central Bureau of Investigations for the Attention of Sex Crimes to arrest four taxis drivers who matched with the profile of a serial rapist; at least 21 victims have recognized and reported them as their attackers.

Officers identified the profile of these serial rapists and their victims, as well as their modus operandi : they look for women outside clubs or offices, they act in a friendly manner, when women get distracted they threaten them with a gun and rape them inside the taxi.

Although these women take the taxis in neighborhoods considered as safe, such as Roma, Condesa, Nápoles, and Santa Fe, they were all abused in the Álvaro Obregón borough.

According to Mara Concepción Prado, the head of the bureau, the borough lacks lighting, surveillance cameras, or police cars. Moreover, there are multiple alleys; all these factors make it easier for these criminals to abuse women.

The victims are young women between 20 and 25, women “who go clubbing,” who are attractive, and who are alone.

“We found four cases of serial rapists, all of them were taxi drivers, they had a total of 21 victims and six investigations, with a defined profile, the abuses are perpetrated in the Álvaro Obregón borough, despite the victims taking the taxi in other locations.”

The official explained that “there are several cases, after being robbed the taxi drivers rape the victims. For example, we have one, it was the equivalent of rape, that means he introduced an object [inside them] and then abandoned them. This one is known as the polite one because women declared that he was very friendly with them and that after attacking the, he seemed apologetic.”

Authorities also identified and arrested Juan Carlos “N”, a serial rapist in the Condesa neighborhood, a 35-year-old taxi driver who operated at night. His victims have medium-light skin tone, thin, and are middle-upper class. He is involved in six cases.
