A couple of years ago, a young man from the peripheral neighborhood of Ecatepec, in Mexico City, became the new voice of Mexican basketball in Barcelona.

Gael Bonilla Silva ranked among the best high school basketball players at the global scale and was invited to participate at the Top 100 Camp, organized by the Players Association, where young men receive training from NBA basketball players.

Out of the list of 100 students who will attend the University of Virginia in June, 94 are from the United States. Bonilla will represent both Mexico and Ecatepec, where he started playing in the streets as a child with his father.

The 16-year-old Mexican’s performance last weekend has made the event organizers look beyond the United States to find new talents.

In spite of playing with a team in which most players and rivals were up to two years older than him, Gael led Barcelona to victory at the Cataluña championship, cadet category.

With 11 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists, Bonilla was named Most Valuable Player.

In 2017, the Real Madrid team invited bonilla to a sub-14 tournament. Back then, Gael was studying at the Cararias Basketball Academy, where he won a 100% scholarship.

The Mexican player is known for his good handling of the ball and resources to score. Furthermore, he is extremely coordinate and has a very good eyesight.
