Guadalajara International Book Fair bids farewell to Latin America as the Guest of Honor for this year's edition and welcomes Madrid for its 2017 edition.

In three decades of history of the prestigious book fair, the Spanish capital will be the second city, only preceded by Los Angeles, being chosen as a Guest of honor to the yearly Mexican literary event, which is widely regarded as one of the best book fairs in the Spanish-speaking world.

Earlier today, Luis Cueto, General Coordinator of Madrid’s Council received the invitation from the Guatemalan poet Humberto Ak’Abal, who represented the region of Latin America in this year’s edition that gathered over 813,000 visitors.

The Spanish capital city was chosen due to its cultural vigor and for being considered “an oasis of literature and culture”.

For his part, Luis Cueto expressed his city’s wish to provide a contemporary approach aimed at a young audience as the core of Madrid’s efforts and participation in next year’s edition of the Guadalajara International Book Fair “We understand that this amazing audience wants to know where we are headed”. Also, he anticipated that one of the figures of Madrid’s next year representation is the cartoonist and painter, Andrés Rábago García, “El Roto” (The Broken) “who has promised to bring to Mexico his punches of awareness”.

Raúl Padilla López, president of Guadalajara International Book Fair noted that, besides of the literary events that took place in the nine days of the fair, there was room for political analysis and reflection “dedicated to current affairs, such as the Mexico-U.S. relationship, the possible implications of the Donald Trump presidency of the U.S., the current state of affairs in Europe, the Latin American crisis, the Anti-corrpution system in Mexico, as well as the Mexican Education Reform”.
