A women's reproductive health advocacy group says officials in northern Mexico are denying an abortion to a 13-year-old girl raped by a family acquaintance.
Regina Tames is director of the Group for Information on Reproductive Choice. She says officials in the state of Sonora are relying on a judge's decision to classify the assault on the girl as a crime short of rape. Abortion is legal in Mexico in cases of rape.
Tames said Monday the attack occurred in May but the group became aware of it last week.
Officials at the communications department for the state health agency said officials were meeting about the case and would comment later.
