EPN: Recapture of "El Chapo" confirms institutional strength

Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto called the recapture of drug lord Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán a "victory for the rule of law" that demonstrates that Mexicans can trust the authorities.

In a televised speech Friday, from National Palace, Peña Nieto expressed that the detention of "El Chapo" confirms that "when Mexicans work together there are no adversities impossible to overcome and that any goal is attainable if we have confidence in the strength and fortitude of our institutions".

He indicated that with this arrest a total of 98 of the 122 most wanted criminals in the country no longer present a threat to Mexican society.

Peña Nieto had announced Guzmán Loera's arrest on social networks. "Mission accomplished: We caught him. I want to report to all Mexicans that Joaquín Guzmán Loera has been arrested," wrote the President on Twitter and Facebook.

"El Chapo" was arrested this early morning in the municipality of Los Mochis, Sinaloa.

Known as the leader of the Sinaloa cartel, Guzmán Loera has been in and out of prison for the last 13 years. Just last July, he escaped from the maximum security prison of "El Altiplano" in the State of Mexico.

Guzmán's escape six months ago from a maximum security prison was a major embarrassment for Peña Nieto's government.
