In his third state-of-the union address, President Enrique Peña Nieto said that Mexico has a clear course and direction and has a more promising development horizon for Mexicans.

In his report, the president said that Mexico has laid solid foundations to accelerate its development and that the country "dared to change for the better."

About the implementation of structural reforms President Peña Nieto said that it "is a gradual process that will bring more benefits for Mexican families every year."

He added that his administration will continue to work with determination to achieve the five major national goals: a peaceful Mexico, inclusive, with quality education, prosperous and with greater global responsibility.

"We will continue along the path and revitalize the government's efforts." He explained that the goal is that Mexicans have better conditions of security and justice, more equal opportunities to obtain the skills and knowledge required to write their own success story and reap the benefits of living in a more prosperous nation with global responsibility.

In the executive summary of the report, the president said that plurality is a strength of the country that has helped improve and strengthen national institutions "to generate greater welfare and prosperity" for Mexicans.

The president also said that given the drop in oil prices, the government will not propose new taxes, neither raise the existing ones, and that his administration will cut expenses to cope with the situation.

About the government's anti-corruption efforts President Peña Nieto said that "a specific section on conflict of interest" was included in the financial statement that must be filed by public servants and highlighted the establishment of the Special Unit of Ethics and Conflict of Interest Prevention within the Ministry of Public Administration (SFP).

In the area of security and justice, President Peña Nieto said that the coordinated efforts and institutional co-responsibility among the three levels of government have been essential to achieve peace in Mexico.

He explained that there are 66,000 soldiers and marines deployed in the country, working to safeguard the security and integrity of Mexicans and added that 92 of the 112 most dangerous criminals have been "neutralized."

President Peña Nieto added that the homicide rate fell from 22.1 in 2012 to 16.4 in 2014.
