Manchester United is closer to return to the Champions League after defeating Bruges 3-1 in the Old Trafford stadium in a first leg game prior to the group stage, with Mexican Javier Hernández playing the last 18 minutes. The "Red Devils" opened the game with a strong search for the first goal, through Spanish Juan Mata, Belgian Adnan Januzaj and Dutch Memphis Depay with long passes that worried the visitors. However, it was the Belgian team the one which opened the score eight minutes after the start, with an own goal from midfielder Michael Carrick, while trying to clear a dangerous center from Víctor Vázquez. The British response did not wait long and on the 12 minute Memphis Depay opened the goalline of Sebastien Bruzzese for the draw. Depay scored again on the 42, and even while the Bruges continued to be a headache for the locals, they managed to keep them from scoring during the remaining time of the first half. In the second half, coach Louis van Gaal sent Mexican Javier Hernández as a replacement of Adnan Januzaj on the 71. "Chicharito" caused the expulsion of defense Brandon Mechele on the 80, when the Belgian made a slide at his back trying to steal the ball, obtaining his second yellow card.
