Mexican DREAMer gets law license in NY

César Vargas, 31, was born in Puebla, Mexico, and arrived in the United States when he was a five-year-old boy.

He graduated from the City University of New York School of Law and passed the state's bar exam.

After considering it for three years, the New York State Supreme Court's Appellate Division in Brooklyn approved Vargas' application to the New York State bar.

The decision making César Vargas, co-director of the DRM Coalition, the first immigrant eligible for the bar is the first New York ruling allowing a law graduate who has been allowed to remain in the country through a program known as DACA eligible for bar admission, according to attorneys in the case. 

José Pérez, deputy general counsel of LatinoJustice who represented Vargas, said his client is "overjoyed" by the decision.

"NY, my home, OFFICIALLY says I can be a licensed lawyer!" Vargas posted to his personal Facebook page.
