Though a lot has been said in the past few weeks about the possibility of “Roma,” Alfonso Cuarón ’s latest film, competing in the upcoming Academy Awards , rumors suggest that Netflix could even compete in some of the major categories.

However, this is not the first time that a streaming company reaches the Oscar nomination ceremony . Little by little, companies such as Amazon Studio and Netflix have caught the attention of film festivals around the world with some major productions such as “Beasts of no Nation” (2015), “Winter on Fire: Ukraine’s Fight for Freedom” (2016), and “Mudbound” (2018) .
In last year’s Academy Awards, Amazon took the lead winning awards for the best actor and best screenplay categories, both for the movie “Manchester by the Sea,” produced by the streaming service.
Amazon paid 10 million dollars for the long feature film after its projection at the Sundance film festival. The movie grossed 46.8 million dollars in commercial theaters .
