María Félix was the main leading lady in Mexican cinema. She was talented, beautiful, had a great sense of style, and an imposing personality, which earned her the title “Mexico's diva.”

She was born on April 8, 1914, and died 88 years later, on the same day.

These are some fun facts about the greatest Mexican diva and fashion icon!

1. She starred in 47 movies in Mexico, France, Spain, Italy, and Argentina.

2. She married four times. She first married cosmetics sales agent Enrique Álvarez in 1931; Mexican songwriter Agustín Lara in 1945; famous singer Jorge Negrete in 1952, and banker Alex Berger, in 1956.

3. She became a movie star by chance. She was walking down the street and top to look at an antique shop when a man approached her. Fernando Palacios was the one who introduced her to the film industry.

4. She refused to work in Hollywood.

5. In 1954, María Félix worked along French director Jean Renoir in the film French Cancan.

6. She was friends with Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. In 1949, Rivera made a portrait of her but she disliked it so much she sold it.

7. She was a fashion icon. She usually dressed in Christian Dior, Givenchy, Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Balenciaga, and Hermès.

8. She had expensive taste. She owned a large jewelry collection, including bespoke Cartier crocodile and snake necklaces and bracelets.

9. King Faruk of Egypt was so in love with her, he offered her Nefertiti's crown.

10. She was seen as a femme fatale: “I became the number one enemy of the Mexican family morals."
