Independent candidate Margarita Zavala , running for President of Mexico, announced today she is stepping down from the contest in keeping with her principles of “coherence and political honesty."
According to snippets from an interview to be broadcast tonight on Tercer Grado, a TV programme by Televisa, the candidate claims she is now “releasing those who have generously supported [her] so they can make their choice as it should be made, during this difficult contest for Mexico.”
Zavala had previously left the conservative National Action Party (PAN) after a rift with the now-candidate of the party, Ricardo Anaya , who was prompt to share the following message on his Twitter account:
“Margarita Zavala, a brave woman of principles. Her contributions to the country and, particularly, to this electoral contest has been very valuable. To her and her team, my full recognition.”
