Minutes ago, Mexico’s Foreign Ministry announced it had instructed its ambassador in Bolivia , María Teresa Mercado , to return to Mexico to ensure her safety, after Bolivia ’s new government declared her a “ persona non grata .”
The Mexican government said the decision to expel the Mexican diplomat from Bolivia has political motivations .
Meanwhile, Ana Luisa Vallejo , the chief of the chancellorship, will be in charge of the Mexican embassy in Bolivia. The Ministry said the embassy will continue operating as usual.
On December 30, Bolivia’s interim President Jeanine Añez ordered the Mexican ambassador and other Spanish diplomats and officials to leave the country within 72 hours.
The Mexican government emphasized the actions of ambassador María Teresa Mercado, who has worked for the federal government since 1982 and has been decorated by countries such as Denmark and The Netherlands .
