A group of surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, and intensivists of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) , successfully placed an artificial heart.

The beneficiary was Mr. Enrique Uribe Borrego, 58 years old , who had previously suffered a stroke, a heart attack, and a tracheostomy, the department said in a statement.

The surgery was performed at the National Medical Center (CMN) "La Raza" and Guillermo Careaga Reyna, general director of the High Specialty Medical Unit , led the team, which had the technical supervision of expert doctors from other countries.

The IMSS rightholder was implanted with a left ventricular support system, state-of-the-art technology of American origin .

The device is a machine with a diameter of 10 centimeters which removes blood from the left ventricle and ejects it by performing the functions of the heart.

The pumping equipment is housed inside the patient's thorax. On the exterior, it is equipped with an electrical connection system . The patient connects to the electric current during the night, while in the day he can move anywhere with it, since the device is connected to long-lasting batteries .

According to the statement, the placement of the device was technically simple, with a smooth recovery for the patient.

The surgical intervention took place in the framework of World Heart Day , which is commemorated on September 29 .
