Writer and investigator Cristina Barros

was awarded with the Silver Molcajete award in recognition of her work in the research and promotion of Mexico’s traditional cuisine .

“I am happy to receive this award, which has been given to some of my great friends: Diana Kennedy, Abigail Mendoza, and Blanca Vidales de Lemus ,” stated Barros in an interview.

“However, it is worth noting that this recognition is given for Mexican cuisine, and my line of work is to investigate it in depth. I also owe it to the people working in rural areas and the traditional villages that keep our culinary heritage alive,” stressed the expert, who is also a great advocate of native maize.

In the sixth edition of the award, Carmen Ramírez Degollado, chairwoman of the committee that gives said recognition, stated that Barros was chosen because of her relentless commitment to national traditions.

“She is always putting effort in the rescue, promotion, and preservation of authentic Mexican gastronomy, caring for each ingredient, technique, and element that distinguishes its tradition from the rest of the world.”

Cristina set her eyes on the field, on small producers . She has thrived to preserve our cuisine and she also protects maize species from the farm industry’s excessive use of transgenic corn,” Ramírez added.

Cristina Barros recently participated in the launch of the “ Tlacoyo Challenge ” through the Power of the Consumer .

“This challenge aims to make traditional Mexican cuisine accessible to everyone, which will allow us to control and eradicate the obesity and diabetes epidemic that is affecting a significant percentage of our society by proposing a healthy nutrition alternative, such as tlacoyo consumption,” commented the specialist.
