Agustín Basave announced his resignation as leader of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD).
On Twitter, he said that being national chairman of the PRD was “the highest privilege of his political career.”
Basave left a “yellow book” for his successor in which he makes proposals to strengthen the party.
In the 41-page document he said that the unexpected consequences of the “Pact for Mexico” and the emergence of Morena -the political party founded by Andrés Manuel López Obrador, former chairman of the PRD- put into question the historical and ideological project of the party.
“The identity of the party has become blurred, but not due to electoral alliances, as predicted, but by the acts of corruption that are still present in the life of our governments, by the inability to keep expressions within an institutional framework and by the closeness of some leaders with the federal government," Basave wrote.
He added that the PRD should keep on making alliances, because the party's victories with the National Action Party (PAN) in Quintana Roo, Veracruz and Durango set an example on how to defeat the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI).
He also said that if the party wants to “regain public trust and moral authority as opponent of the PRI and the government, it has to investigate and, if necessary, expel corrupt members of the PRD.”
Basave will be replaced by Beatriz Mojica, who will head the party for 15 days.
